Mound Time 14s secure state Babe Ruth championship

The local 14-year-old all-stars beat a familiar foe — Tualatin Hills — to win the North Oregon Babe Ruth state championship on Tuesday

KEIZER — It was like old home week for the Mound Time 14-year-old all-stars on Tuesday night.

Playing in the North Oregon Babe Ruth State Tournament championship game at Volcanoes Stadium, Mound Time found itself facing a familiar opponent – actually its most familiar opponent – Tualatin Hills Summit Research.

The two Beaverton teams squared off for the 10th time this summer on Tuesday night, and for the eighth time, it was Mound Time that emerged victorious, beating Tualatin Hills 9-3 to win the state crown.

“Our goal from the start of the season was to get to regionals and, hopefully, go on to the World Series,” said Mound Time manager Derrick Jones.

Mound Time accomplished the first part of that goal by winning on Tuesday. Mound Time now advances to the Pacific Northwest Regional Aug. 2-7 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, ID. Mound Time opens the regional against Alberta, Canada, at 4 p.m. Monday, meets British Columbia at 10 a.m. Tuesday, faces South Washington at 1 p.m. Aug. 4, and ends pool play against Lewiston at 7 p.m. Aug. 5.

Tournament semifinals are set for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 7, and the tournament championship for 5 p.m. Aug. 7. The Regional winner advances to the 2010 Babe Ruth World Series in Virginia.

While there’s a lot of work to be done before the team starts thinking World Series, Jones knows that his team has a lot of the necessary tools to succeed at the regional.

“They come out and every guy, one through 14, is a guy who can contribute in any situation,” Jones said. “I feel very fortunate to have that type of problem.”

Mound Time opened the state tournament with an 8-7 win over Tualatin Hills on July 22, hammered Hermiston 31-0 on Friday, beat Snake River Valley 29-7 on Sunday, took out The Dalles 10-0 in Monday’s quarterfinal, shut out Snake River Valley 10-0 in Tuesday’s semi, then closed its tourney with the 9-3 win over Tualatin Hills.
