Terry Porter heads eight-member Oregon Sports Hall of Fame class for 2010 induction

Former Trail Blazer great Terry Porter heads an eight-member Class of 2010 to be inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Porter's classmates are ex-Oregon State quarterback Paul Brothers, Olympic luger and amateur sports philanthropist Jack Elder, golfer Brian Henninger, sports writer and commentator Dwight Jaynes, former referee Nate Jones, legendary high school basketball coach Nick Robertson and NCAA champion gymnast Joy Selig Petersen from OSU.

The class will be inducted Sept. 28 at Multnomah Athletic Club. The 31st annual ceremony starts at 7 p.m., with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Blazer broadcaster Bill Schonely will emcee. Tickets are $90 or $850 for a table of 10. Call the Hall of Fame, 503-227-7466, for information.

Porter, the 24th pick in the 1985 NBA draft, started at point guard for the Blazers for more than eight seasons and became a two-time All-Star. He averaged 14.9 points, 7.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds during his Blazer career and left in 1995 as the team's all-time leader in assists and 3-pointers made and attempted. He ranks second all-time in Blazer points (11,330), minutes, field goals, steals, consecutive games played and free throws made and attempted.

Porter went on to play seven more NBA seasons with Minnesota, Miami and San Antonio. His 23-year NBA career as a player and coach includes 20 playoff appearances, including trips to the finals with the Blazers in 1990 and 1992. He was head coach in Milwaukee and Phoenix and an assistant coach in Sacramento and Detroit.

A Milwaukee, Wisc., native who played for Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Porter won the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1993.
