The first alcohol-related fatalities of 2004 occurred shortly after 1 a.m. New Year’s Day when an Acura struck a Volkswagen Jetta at the intersection of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Fremont Street. Police said the Acura’s driver, Martin Lockett, 24, ran a red light.

The driver of the Jetta, Mara B. Katlaps, 47, and passenger Linda Jean Davenport, 44, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger in the Jetta, Anthony Clyne, 37, was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center. His condition has not been released.

Lockett was charged with two counts of first-degree manslaughter and one count each of second-degree assault, reckless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He and a passenger in his car were not injured.

In addition to the Portland fatalities, Michael John Dabaw, 23, a soldier stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., was killed in Gresham when he lost control of his Toyota Echo around 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day at Southeast Stark Street near 174th Avenue.

Dabaw’s car was broadsided by a Chevrolet Suburban. Both vehicles slid into a Kia four-door sedan.

Gresham police found open alcohol containers in Dabaw’s car, according to department spokesman Grant McCormick.

Three other pedestrians were killed in driving accidents in late December, including an elderly man run over by a TriMet bus; a woman struck crossing Southwest Barbur Boulevard; and a woman hit by a suspected drunken driver whose car jumped the curb on Northeast 82nd Avenue.
