Norris set to take on Kennemer

Oregon City Mayor Alice Norris will likely step into the race for HD 39 now that Democrat Toby Forsberg has bowed out

With her two-term stint as Oregon City mayor coming to a close, Alice Norris announced last week that she will fill a recently created vacancy on the Democrats’ election roster and run against incumbent Republican Bill Kennemer in House District 39.

Norris announced her intentions last week, shortly after Toby Forsberg announced his withdrawal to spend more time with his family. County Democrats were set to formally vote on making her the nominee Tuesday night after press time.

Norris’s name has continually been suggested as a potential candidate for open seats throughout the county over the past several years. This time, the rumor is reality.

“I am just finishing up eight successful years in Oregon City, so the time is right,” she said. “Oregon City had a few major challenges when I came in as mayor that are not dissimilar to some of the challenges that the state faces.”

Norris acknowledged that the city had to make gut-wrenching decisions in the past to balance a budget, and she thinks it’s time to do the same thing in Salem.

“When you prioritize spending and you’re protecting the vital services, then you have to make some tough choices, just as we did in Oregon City,” she said.
