Vern Uyetake / Lake Oswego Review
Crews tore down the two homes owned by Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church during the first phase of construction of a multipurpose parish center and school. One of the homes was formerly a rental, while the other one was occupied by the parochial vicar. Father Robert Wolf, the new parochial vicar, will now live in the 6,000-square-foot rectory on Eighth Avenue along with Father Joseph McMahon.

Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Parish in Lake Oswego ripped into the two homes at the corner of Evergreen Avenue last week, commencing its first phase of construction of a new multipurpose K-8 school and parish office center. Phase one — the parking lot expansion and sitework — will be completed this summer.
The new parking lot will provide 25 percent more parking and will have two exits to the west onto Eighth Avenue and retain the exit to the alley on the east side. The playground equipment will be moved and reinstalled slightly to the east of its current location. The site work includes landscaping on Evergreen and Eighth Avenue.
The next thing to come down will be the parish office building, which was build in 1963 as a convent for the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The building will be demolished this fall as phase two begins.
The construction of the new parish center and school will continue with safety barriers as school starts. Construction equipment will be staged at the location of the two houses. The parish staff will be temporarily relocated.
The plans allow for the first floor of the building to be ready for occupancy when school starts in the fall of 2011, while the second floor, which will house the parish offices, may still be under construction.
The last phase will take place next summer and would take down the old school, which was constructed in 1942 and 1958. The phase also includes final landscaping.
The new facility will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. The building will be seismically secure with complete fire and security systems and compliant with the American Disabilities Act.
The new site will have improved outdoor athletic spaces, a play area, 132-space parking lot, and a 56,249 square-foot multipurpose parish center. The expanded center is about 2,000 square feet bigger and makes more efficient use of space. The parish offices will be on the second floor, and the school will be sited on the first floor.
